Report: Claire McCaskill to Meet With Kavanaugh on SCOTUS

Embattled Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill will meet with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh later this month — and four other vulnerable red-state Democrats plan to talk with President Donald Trump's choice before August ends.

McCaskill's office told Politico that she will meet with Kavanaugh on Aug. 21, while North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and Indiana Sen. Joe Donnelly have sessions scheduled for Aug. 15.

Montana Sen. Jon Tester, another vulnerable Democrat, is also expected to talk with Kavanaugh later this month, his office told Politico.

Last week, another red-state Democrat in a tough re-election bid, West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, met with Kavanaugh — the first member of his party to do so.

Trump nominated Kavanaugh, 53, a federal appeals court judge in Washington, to succeed retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, whose last day on the court was Tuesday. Kennedy, 82, was nominated in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, the Iowa Republican, said Wednesday that Kavanaugh could be confirmed by October amid a continued push by top Democrats for documents from his tenure as White House staff secretary to former President George W. Bush.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York continued his Twitter rant over Kavanaugh's papers on Friday:

It apparently wasn’t enough to limit which documents they requested from the White House Counsel’s office, or to block the release of critical records from the nominee’s final three years in the White House.
