Following continued verbal blasts by President Donald Trump, some members of the media are being accompanied to his rallies by security guards, Politico is reporting.
On Instagram, NBC News White House correspondent Geoff Bennett posted a photo of himself with NBC security at the president’s recent Ohio rally, according to Politico.
"We need security guards when covering rallies hosted by the President of the United States,” he wrote. "Let that sink in."
And ABC White House correspondent Tara Palmeri tweeted about covering the Ohio rally "for the first time with a bodyguard."
Reporters fear they could become bigger targets as while Trump refers to the media as the "enemy of the people," Politico noted.
CNN’s Jim Acosta was recently heckled by Trump supporters at a Tampa rally.
And a supporter of Trump’s threatened "to shoot" CNN anchors Brian Stelter and Don Lemon during a call with C-SPAN while on the air on Friday.
MSNBC’s Katy Tur said last week the public is not fully aware of the harassment journalists face, Politico said.
"What you do not see are the nasty letters or packages or emails…the threats of physical violence," she said. "'I hope you get raped and killed,' one person wrote to me just this week. 'Raped and killed.' Not just me, but a couple of my female colleagues as well."
