Spicer: Trump Always Looking for 'Best Deal'

President Donald Trump is always looking for the "best deal," and nobody should be surprised that he's working with Democrats on agreements on government funding and a resolution to the "dreamers" issue, former Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Friday.

"I don't think this is a news flash — this president is a deal maker," Spicer, who stepped down in July, told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program. "He made very clear during the campaign that he is a CEO businessman that knew how to strike a good deal when he saw it, and he's going to do what's in the best interest of this country when he can get a good deal."

Several conservatives are upset with Trump's dealing with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., after they struck a deal last week to extend the nation's debt ceiling by three months, and particularly over their talks on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

"If it's going to be with Republicans, it's going to be with Republicans," Spicer said of Trump's deal making. "If it's with Democrats, it's with Democrats. If it's with a bipartisan group of individuals, it's going to be them — but it shouldn't be any kind of a surprise that he's going to make the best deal possible at every turn."

"Trump is focused on getting the wall built at the Mexican border, despite his talks about DACA," Spicer insisted.

"He has a big heart. He understands the magnitude of this problem when it comes to immigration, but President Trump has made the wall a huge priority," Spicer said. "Like it or not, I don't see how you get a deal done that doesn't include the wall because that's been a major priority of this president."

Spicer on Friday also reflected on his time after leaving the White House, admitting that life these days is "much more relaxed," but that he considers it an honor to have been Trump's press secretary and to speak on behalf of the United States.

"I will cherish it for the rest of my life," Spicer said. "Life since then has been very, very enjoyable and relaxed."
