Scott Walker: Mandatory Ultrasounds May Prevent More Abortions

By    |   Wednesday, 27 May 2015 10:32 PM

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker defended a bill he signed in 2013 requiring mandatory ultrasounds for women seeking abortions.

Appearing on "The Dana Show" on Wednesday, Walker said the requirement might cause some women to change their mind once they see a picture of their unborn child.

"Most people I talk to, whether they're pro-life or not, I find people all the time who'll get out their iPhone and show me a picture of their grandkids' ultrasound and how excited they are, so that's a lovely thing," Walker said. "I think about my sons who are 19 and 20 — you know, we still have their first ultrasound picture. It's just a cool thing out there."

Walker, who is likely to announce a presidential run this summer, said, "We just knew if we signed that law, if we provided the information, that more people, if they saw that unborn child, would make a decision to protect and keep the life of that unborn child."

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards didn't like Walker's reasoning, telling NPR, "Women are very clear that forced government ultrasounds are not 'cool.'"

The Daily Caller pointed out that Politico's original headline on the story made it sound like Walker said mandatory ultrasounds are "really cool," when he actually was referring only to ultrasounds that grandparents show off of their grandchildren.

"Scott Walker on mandatory ultrasounds: 'It's just a cool thing out there,'" the Caller said the original headline read. Politico changed its headline to read: "Scott Walker defends mandatory ultrasounds."

The NPR headline read: "Scott Walker Says Ultrasounds Are 'Just A Cool Thing.'"
