MSNBC "Morning Joe" anchor Joe Scarborough suggested Friday that fired FBI director James Comey's actions led to Donald Trump being elected president.
"Donald Trump himself will not admit that James Comey, who he loathes, is the reason why he's president of the United States," Scarborough said.
Scarborough cited the inspector general report on FBI actions in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.
"James Comey launched the greatest October surprise in the history of American politics and it ripped to shreds the Hillary Clinton campaign," Scarborough said on "Morning Joe."
"The bottom line of this report is that James Comey and FBI agents held on to evidence of Anthony Weiner's laptop for a month, said they didn't have time to actually look at it … and so they waited a month and then sent that letter 10 days before the election, guaranteeing that it would destroy Hillary Clinton's campaign," Scarborough said.
The anchor also addressed the IG report on Twitter Thursday, referring to delaying the release of the Weiner email letter.
"Comey dropped it at the worst time possible for Clinton and the absolutely best time for a Trump," Scarborough tweeted.
Scarborough noted a segment of the report shown in a tweet by Sean Davis of The Federalist.
"We found these explanations to be unpersuasive justifications for not acting sooner, given the FBI leadership's conclusion about the importance of the information," the inspector general's report said about the FBI's reasoning for not taking immediate action on the Weiner laptop.
