White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday the suggestion that the Trump administration supports slavery — in light of Chief of Staff John Kelly's praise of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee — was "disgusting and absurd."

"I think it is disgusting and absurd to suggest that anyone inside of this building would support slavery," Sanders told reporters at the daily briefing.

She was responding to a question from April Ryan, Washington bureau chief for American Urban Radio Networks and a CNN commentator.

Kelly has come under sharp attack for praising Lee on Monday in a Fox News interview as "an honorable man" and saying that "the lack of an ability to compromise" led to the Civil War."

"I'm not going to get in and re-litigate the Civil War," Sanders said. "I'm not going to re-litigate history here."
