Two Democratic congressmen want to know if President Donald Trump's goal is to remove the Assad regime in Syria, The Hill is reporting.
In a letter to Trump, Reps. Ruben Gallego of Arizona and Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania asked about his long-term strategy.
"Given America's escalating involvement in this conflict, we write to request clarification of this fundamental aspect of American strategy — moving forward, will your administration actively pursue the removal from power of President (Bashar) Assad?" the congressmen wrote.
The two lawmakers maintained the administration's statements following the U.S. missile attack on a Syrian airbase were "confusing and contradictory" and signaled a lack of strategy is dealing with Syria in the future, The Hill noted.
"Moreover, this confusion among your top advisors on such a basic aspect of US policy is compelling evidence of a lack of thorough planning in advance of the airstrikes you ordered and of a troubling failure to consider their potential ramifications," the lawmakers said in the letter.
Following the U.S. missile attack, Gallego maintained he was concerned Trump did not put much thought into the long-term effects of the decision, the Arizona Capitol Times reported.
He said he is also concerned that the praise Trump is receiving for the attack could lead to an escalation, given the president's "track record of impulsive and immature decision making," the newspaper said.
