Leaders of the Republican Study Committee, say they oppose the deal cut by President Donald Trump and top Democratic lawmakers to raise the debt limit ceiling, Politico reported.

"While some have advocated for a 'clean' debt limit increase, this would simply increase the borrowing authority of the government while irresponsibly ignoring the urgency of reforms," Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., chairman of the RSC, said in a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis.

"Worse yet is attaching the debt limit to legislation that continues the status quo or even worsens the trajectory on spending, such as the deal announced [Wednesday] by the president and Congressional leadership. The RSC Steering Committee opposes this proposal.

"Another problem is that such a debt limit increase seems to lack the votes to pass with Republican votes."

The study committee represents about 150 conservative House members, according to Politico.

The Washington Examiner noted Trump had struck the deal the with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., because they were willing to back a short-term extension.

The measure is expected to be part of a bill to provide billions of dollars in relief for victims of Hurricane Harvey.
