A former Alabama judge and current candidate for the Senate said in a new interview the United States could be the new "focus of evil in the modern world."
Roy Moore, who resigned from his post as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court this year in order to run for attorney general Jeff Sessions' former Senate seat, spoke with The Guardian and was asked about former President Ronald Reagan's famous quote regarding the Soviet Union.
"You could say that about America, couldn't you? We promote a lot of bad things," Moore said.
When asked to give an example, Moore replied, "Same-sex marriage."
The Guardian then told Moore his feelings on gay rights and morality mirrored those of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Well, maybe Putin is right," Moore said. "Maybe he's more akin to me than I know."
Moore, Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., and several others are challenging Sen. Luther Strange for Sessions' old seat. Strange was appointed the seat earlier this year after Sessions became attorney general. A primary is scheduled for next Tuesday, while the special election to decide who serves the remainder of Sessions' term — through January 2021 — will take place in December.
Actor Chuck Morris recently endorsed Moore's candidacy for the Senate.
