President Donald Trump's efforts to keep his campaign promises are more important than any lies he tells the public, Missouri GOP Sen. Roy Blunt said Sunday.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Blunt argued the falsehoods aren’t necessarily intentional.
"I think the way the president communicates whether he intends to mislead people or just doesn't have all the facts in his mind at the time, he is a very accessible to the press,” Blunt said. “How many times did he respond to the press last week? I saw where he gets off the plane, on the plane, answers questions, lays out whatever he is thinking at the time.
"The more important thing, I would suggest, is doing what you say you are going to do when elected president."
Blunt also praised Trump’s efforts to deal with the rogue regime of North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, saying the president was “left with a lot of problems.”
“We had about eight years where we acted like the United States of America was basically any other country in the world,” Blunt said. “A lot of things got off track during that eight years. I think the president stepped in in a way that has helped that — Korea, what may happen with Iran…”
He dismissed criticism about a tweet from Trump blaming the Obama administration for three U.S. detainees in North Korea despite two of the prisoners being taken since Trump took office.
"The important thing there is to get the hostages out of Korea," Blunt said.
“I can tell you in the last two years or last six months of the Obama presidency, North Korea has probably taken more time and we have had more concern about that than virtually any other issue,” he added. “We have let North Korea get to where they are likely in a very dangerous position vis-a-vis the neighborhood and the world and something needs to be done about it.”
