Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Miss., believes President Donald Trump's Senate impeachment trial will be completed ahead of the State of the Union address Feb. 4.
"I think it will still happen quickly," Blunt said Tuesday during an interview with Missouri radio station KSSZ. "Just reading [Monday], and the information we received about the State of the Union, that the president has been invited by [House Speaker Nancy Pelosi] to give the State of the Union speech on Feb. 4. My guess is we will be done with this by the time the president comes.
"I think we should have had enough time for both the House to fairly present its view of why the president should be impeached and for the president, I'd argue for the first time, to have a chance for his lawyers to explain why he shouldn't be, and then we'll have that vote and move on," he added.
Pelosi has yet to hand over the articles of impeachment voted on in the lower chamber and says she will not do so until she is reassured the GOP-controlled Senate will conduct a fair and impartial trial. The lower chamber returns to Washington on Jan. 7, marking the first day Pelosi could transmit the two articles to the Senate.
