Almost half of Americans think it is likely President Donald Trump committed a crime in connection with possible Russian attempts to influence the 2016 election, a new poll found.
The Washington Post/ABC News survey released Thursday showed 49 percent of Americans think it is likely Trump committed a crime, while 44 percent think it is unlikely.
However, only 19 percent think there has been "solid evidence" of criminal wrongdoing by Trump – and 30 percent say it is their suspicion only, the survey found.
Meanwhile, 58 percent of Americans approve of how special counsel Robert Mueller is handling the probe, while 28 percent disapprove – and 68 percent approve of the federal charges filed against Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and one of his associates, Richard Gates.
The survey also found 28 percent think the case is limited to Manafort, Richard Gates and a former Trump campaign adviser, George Papadopoulos, who has pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents – but 53 percent see "broader wrongdoing," and 19 percent are withholding judgment.
In other findings:
- 37 percent think Trump is cooperating with the investigation, while 51 percent say he is not cooperating, and 12 percent have no opinion.
- 78 percent of Democrats and 56 percent of independents approve of the way Mueller is handling the investigation, compared with 38 percent of Republicans.
- 57 percent of Republicans say they approve of the indictments against Manafort and Gates, as do 78 percent of Democrats.
The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
