Delegates on the floor of the GOP convention booed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as his name was being called by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.
Priebus put McConnell's name forward as temporary convention chairman until House Speaker Paul Ryan takes over, according to
The Hill.
The loud boos happened after many in the crowd signified their approval by saying "aye." Priebus signified McConnell's election by saying, "In the chair's opinion, the ayes have it."
As the boos continued, Priebus said with a laugh, "It's pretty clear, guys. I'm sorry."
McConnell was not present during the vote, according to the Hill.
He led Republicans in
blocking the nomination to the Supreme Court of Merrick Garland, and has spoken out against President Barack Obama's policies.
McConnell has often criticized likely presidential nominee Donald Trump. In June on a
Bloomberg podcast, he said, "It's pretty obvious he doesn't know a lot about the issues."
Polls have shown McConnell as unpopular on several instances.
In May,
Public Policy Polling reported that McConnell had an 11 percent approval rating among those it surveyed and in March, they named him the most hated political figure in America.
