Rick Santorum says conservatives feel they are in a battle to stop the liberal attack on their "faith, family and freedom."
"One of the reasons conservatives feel under assault is because … we are being told that some higher power is going to dictate that to us," the former senator from Pennsylvania and one-time GOP presidential candidate, said in a speech Tuesday at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California.
"Conservatives feel like we are in a battle, because there are big stakes that frankly, very few people talk about."
In his address, first reported by Coast Report Online, Santorum said he believed "faith, generally, is under attack" in the United States.
"And not by people who want to impose racism or bigotry but people who see that the basic right in our founding documents to practice the faith that they believe in is being jeopardized," Santorum told the crowd.
"When I was growing up faith was everywhere," Santorum said. "It was in the common speech on television shows. It was just a part of the culture you, couldn't miss it. Now, you have to look for it."
Santorum also discussed his issue with birth control, telling the audience, "Millions and millions of people that engage in sexual relations as a result of contraception are not happy. They have nothing they really want. They have nothing that's true, beautiful and lasting."
