Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., says he accepts the Electoral College vote and recognizes Joe Biden as the president-elect.
Shelby’s comments came on Wednesday in a statement to AL.com.
“The Electoral College met earlier this week, which is our constitutional process for determining the result of the presidential election,” said Shelby, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “The electors voted 306 for Joe Biden and 232 for Donald Trump, thereby making Joe Biden the official President-elect. While I wish it would have yielded a different outcome, it’s time to move on.”
On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., congratulated Biden and called him the president-elect.
McConnell said the Electoral College “has spoken.”
