It’s a squeaker in the race for Rhode Island governor.

A new poll of 407 likely Rhode Island voters has found Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo with 39 percent of the vote and her Republican challenger Allan Fung with 37 percent.

Another 14 percent are undecided and 6 percent are backing Republican-turned-independent Joe Trillo.

“It’s a dead heat,” said Joe Fleming, who supervised the poll for WPRI 12 and Roger Williams University.

Raimondo’s lead remains within the margin of error, and the results are almost identical to the previous WPRI 12/RWU poll conducted in late February.

“Allan Fung is faring much better with independent voters at this time and that’s crucial because the Republican vote is so small in Rhode Island -- you have to do very well among independents,” Fleming said.

Raimondo he added, “has to move that number up -- she has to get some of the independents to come over.”

The survey, conducted from July 28-31, has an overall margin of sampling error of plus or minus approximately 4.8 percentage points.
