Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin reportedly formed a "suicide pact" in which all three Cabinet members would exit if President Donald Trump tried to oust one of them.
BuzzFeed News, citing an unnamed U.S. official, reported the revelation Wednesday as speculation swirled about Tillerson's future in the administration.
BuzzFeed News also cited unnamed sources doubting Tillerson would leave because of the reported big tax bill he would have to pay if he resigns before serving a year in government.
Meanwhile, NBC News reported Wednesday that Tillerson threatened to resign in July after the president's politically charged speech to the Boy Scouts, but that Mattis and John Kelly, then serving as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, talked him out of it.
Tillerson, meanwhile, tamped down the speculation about any resignation, declaring he has never considered leaving his post as the nation's top diplomat.
