House Republican leaders, in an apparent change of strategy, are now looking to concentrate their efforts to defend President Donald Trump from impeachment on the substance of the Ukraine allegations against him, Politico is reporting.
It marks a shift away from focusing on the impeachment process. And the president signaled that’s the direction he prefers to take as well, according to Politico.
“I’d rather go into the details of the case rather than process,” Trump told reporters Monday. “Process is good, but I think you ought to look at the case.”
Politico noted that Republican leaders asked some of Trump’s top allies to their weekly Monday meeting to discuss efforts to protect Trump from impeachment.
The impeachment inquiry has centered on allegations Trump held up military aid to Ukraine in part because he wanted the Ukrainian government to investigate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
Until recently, Republicans have been attacking the process and blasting Democrats for taking depositions behind closed doors. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced Monday the House will vote this week to formalize the impeachment inquiry and lay out procedures for open hearings.
Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., said both the process of the inquiry and the substance of the allegations are important for Republicans to focus on.
“I believe that both are important to talk about,” Zeldin said. “The process goes to the legitimacy, the credibility, the fairness of what House Democrats are pursuing. The substance is incredibly important as well.”
