Paul Ryan Hires Romney's GOP Convention Filmmaker

Rep. Paul Ryan has hired the filmmaker who directed and edited a prize-winning video used for introducing Mitt Romney at the 2012 Republican National Convention, sparking speculation about the lawmaker's national ambitions.

The Wisconsin Republican's leadership committee, Prosperity Action, has paid more than $81,000 for "media/photography services" to Washington, D.C.-based filmmaker Clare Burns, whose heads Calabur Productions, USA Today reports.

Burns' 10-minute biopic of Romney won a gold "Pollie" award in 2012 for best non-broadcast, Republican video from the American Association of Political Consultants, USA Today notes.

Ryan aides wouldn't tell USA Today why she was hired, or what she's doing for Ryan's PAC.

"It's not something you normally would see for just a member of Congress," Bill Allison, editorial director of the non-partisan Sunlight Foundation, told USA Today.

Ryan has said he's focused on his job in Congress rather than a White House run, although he said he would not make a decision about 2016 until next year.

He is House Budget Committee chairman and is favored next year to take over the Ways and Means Committee, where he plans to tackle tax policy.

"I am just not one of those people who want to spend two years flying around the country trying for another job when I feel like I have an important one to do right now," Ryan said, USA Today reported.
