Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., wants Congress to crack down on robocalls from those trying to collect on federal loans, The Hill is reporting.
Eshoo has introduced a bill, called Help Americans Never Get Unwanted Phone calls (HANGUP) to make certain no one gets robocalls from a government contractor.
"No one should be subjected to harassing or unwanted robocalls, whether they come from a government contractor or anywhere else," Eshoo said
A provision in the 2015 Budget Act exempted the debt collectors from a 1991 law restricting telemarketing calls and robocalls, The Hill noted.
"The HANGUP Act restores these critical protections for consumers by establishing a statutory roadblock to unwanted robocalls and texts from government contractors," Eshoo said.
She unveiled her bill as the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection was to hold a hearing on robocalls.
"Unfortunately, this problem is getting worse," said Rep. Bob Latta, R-Ohio. Latta who chairs the subcommittee, made his comments in a column for the Washington Examiner.
"Every day, tens of thousands of American consumers report receiving a robocall," he said.
