Almost 40 percent of Americans in a Rasmussen poll believe the same as President Donald Trump that special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into claims of Russian interference in the 2016 election should end.
Among the poll's results:
- 39 percent of likely U.S. voters agree with Trump that Mueller should close the probe.
- 50 percent disagree Mueller should close the probe.
- 11 percent are undecided on the issue.
Trump has called the Mueller probe a "witch hunt." The president said Aug. 1 that Attorney General Jeff Sessions should "stop this rigged witch hunt now."
The U.S. judge overseeing Mueller's probe Monday agreed to set an independent lawyer to review pretrial evidence for possible national security issues before handing it over to a Kremlin-linked defendant.
The survey of 1,000 likely U.S. voters was conducted Aug. 2-5, 2018, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points and a 95 percent level of confidence, the poll report said.
