Rep. Fine to Newsmax: Bill Sets 'Minimum National Standards' on Elections

By    |   Friday, 06 February 2026 08:08 AM EST

The House Republicans' newly introduced "Make Elections Great Again Act" would establish "minimum national standards" for federal elections, including voter photo ID requirements and citizenship verification, Rep. Randy Fine told Newsmax on Friday.

"This will make our elections more secure by making sure people are Americans," the Florida Republican said on Newsmax's "Wake Up America."

The bill, introduced by House Administration Committee Chair Bryan Steil, R-Wis., is being promoted as a sweeping set of baseline election rules for states, including requirements for photo identification, voter roll maintenance, and absentee ballot deadlines.

Fine also pointed to a separate election measure introduced by Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, the "SAVE America Act," which would add a voter ID requirement while keeping proof-of-citizenship provisions tied to voter registration.

"I do believe we're going to vote on the SAVE Act next week," Fine said. "The question will be what happens when they get to the Senate? And is the Senate willing to do what's necessary to get them done?"

He said the Senate filibuster could determine whether the measures advance.

"Even Democrats overwhelmingly support voter photo ID and only letting citizens vote in our elections," Fine said. "But the question will be with the filibuster, is the Senate willing to do what's necessary to get those bills passed?"

President Donald Trump, in urging Republicans to support the SAVE Act, wrote on Truth Social that "America's elections are rigged, stolen and a laughing stock all over the world."

He added that "We're either going to fix them or we won't have a country any longer."

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., criticized Trump's call for national standards, saying, "This is more dangerous autocratic poison from Donald Trump," but Fine dismissed Schumer's remarks.

"That's just a bunch of nonsense," he said. "The fact of the matter is, we have national standards and elections. We've had them for decades."

"Having minimum national standards to make sure voters everywhere in the country can have confidence in their elections," he added. "It's not totalitarian, it's democracy."

Fine further insisted that Democrats oppose voter ID laws because they "want to create the conditions where cheating can take place," he said.
