Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello, a vocal critic of the GOP tax overhaul because of its impact on the Caribbean island, said Thursday he is planning to mobilize Latinos to vote against Republicans in 2018 midterm elections.
In an interview on MSNBC's "MTP Daily," Rosello, a Democrat and member of the island's New Progressive Party, argued the tax bill hurts Puerto Rico's economy.
"Right now, we're going to do an evaluation of all the congressmen and congresswomen that have pledged support toward the people of Puerto Rico, and in the time to take action they have reneged on that word," he said.
"So there is still time to work, we want to do this of course in a non-political fashion, but we have to recognize that our voice, you know, we are second-class citizens," he continued. "We don't have representation. But we do have 5.3 million Puerto Ricans in the United States, and we want to organize."
Rossello has sharply criticized the Republican tax plan, under which Puerto Rican companies would be considered offshore entities, and subject to higher taxes than mainland-based corporations — and called out Florida GOP Sen. Marco Rubio for supporting the bill.
