Democrats have improved their chances for taking control of the House of Representatives, according to the latest projection released by CBS News.
The Democrats are currently slated to win 222 seats if the election were held today, which is a slight increase from the estimate of 219 seats earlier this summer.
The range on that estimate is plus or minus 11 seats, or 5 percent of House seats, and reflects the fact that many contests are still toss-ups and that Republicans continue to be in a position to hold on to a majority in the House, even if it is a reduced one.
The CBS poll surveyed voters across 57 key districts in the race for the House.
One of the key factors bolstering Democratic support is the female vote, as women prefer the Democratic candidate over the GOP one by 12 percentage points, while men prefer Republicans by only 8 points, resulting in a large gender gap.
Over the summer, Democratic candidates have become more competitive in Republican-held seats nationwide, many of which are open contests in heavily white districts that President Donald Trump carried in 2016, according to CBS.
Several Republicans whom the CBS survey did not previously consider vulnerable are now in danger of being ousted. Although GOP chances have improved in some districts, only a few Democratic seats that Republicans have a chance of winning remain in play.
