Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will create a life-or-death situation for women if he’s confirmed as a justice by overturning the right to an abortion and endangering women’s access to healthcare, progressive female lawmakers said Tuesday, The Washington Times reported.
"My heart breaks when I think about how Kavanaugh’s confirmation would hurt expecting and new moms too, who would have a harder time getting access to the maternity care that they need,” said Illinois Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth said at a press conference.
Some Democratic senators made the argument that Kavanaugh was selected by right-wing, conservative groups who want to repeal the Affordable Care Act and overturn Roe v Wade, the 1973 landmark decision creating a legal right to an abortion.
New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said Kavanaugh would outlaw abortion, criminalizing women who seek reproductive health care.
"This judge will undermine the ability of women of color particular to survive," she said. “The intention is to take away women’s rights."
Duckworth is one of the key Democrats insisting on more documents showing Kavanaugh’s record than Republicans are willing to give them, according to WLS Radio in Chicago.
The senator said the judge could put this issue to rest.
"If he truly has nothing to hide, why would he not come forward and say release all of my documents?” she asked. “Release all my documents, let everybody see. If he has nothing to hide, why would he be complicit with this administration in hiding all of this paper that is out there. Literally a million pages of documentation that shows why he’s not suited to be on the Supreme Court.”
