Americans may not agree with each other politically, but most do share similar priorities and long-term goals for the nation, according to a new poll.
Out of the top 15 priorities listed by Democrats and Republicans, nine issues held the same importance for both sides, the new polling by Populace shows, reports Axios.
In addition, voters for both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump said there is a sense of urgency to address five of those concerns: criminal justice reforms, helping the middle class, modernizing infrastructure, access to high-quality healthcare, and safety in neighborhoods and communities.
Respondents also listed preserving clean air and water and addressing climate change among their top five personal priorities for the United States, but said they think those issues rank closer to the bottom of the list for "most others."
Among the findings:
- Voters for Biden ranked climate issues higher than Trump's voters did, but addressing climate change still popped up in the top 15 priorities among Trump's voters.
- Most people said they do not care much if the United States is the world's most powerful country, but they think that it is a middle-of-the-road priority for others.
- The priorities did not differ much between ethnicity, gender, education, or income lines.
- Commitment to individual rights, including free speech, the right to keep and bear arms, freedom of religion, and peaceful assembly, was the top priority for the overall group surveyed and landed in the top three priorities for both Biden and Trump voters.
And while politicians on both sides have been calling for national unity, being unified just for the sake of pulling together was listed by both sides as one of their lowest priorities.
The poll was conducted between Jan. 21-28, during the first week of Biden's presidency, among 2,010 citizens. The choice-based polling method did not allow for a typical margin of error to be determined, but the certainty scores were listed as 85.3% for personal response and 84.5% for perceived societal responses.
