Rep. Diane Black, R-Tenn., who is running for governor of Tennessee, on Tuesday said porn played a "big part" in the rise of mass shootings in schools, HuffPost reports.

"It's available on the shelf when you walk in the grocery store," she said last week during a meeting with local pastors at Safe Harbor of Clarksville, Tennessee. "Yeah, you have to reach up to get it, but there's pornography there. All of this is available without parental guidance. I think that is a big part of the root cause."

There have been 23 school shootings in the United States in 2018 where someone was injured or killed, per CNN, including one May 25 when a gunman opened fire at Noblesville West Middle School in Noblesville, Indiana. Ten people were killed in a shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas on May 18, and 17 in Parkland, Florida, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in one of the deadliest school shootings in modern U.S. history.

Black blamed the increase in shootings on "deterioration of the family," "violent movies," and "pornography."

Black's office did not respond to a request for comment from the HuffPost.
