Kobach: 'We May Never Know' If Clinton Won Popular Vote

"MSNBC Live"

The vice chairman of President Donald Trump's voter fraud commission said Wednesday it might never be clear who won the popular vote in last fall's presidential election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

"We may never know the answer to that question," Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach told "MSNBC Live" when asked if the commission believes Clinton did not win the popular vote.

Vote totals show Clinton won the popular vote last November, despite Trump winning the election via the Electoral College. When pressed on that point, Kobach said it is not clear how many ineligible voters cast votes and who they voted for.

"What I'm saying is, let's say that the commission determined that there were a certain number of votes cast by ineligible voters," he said. "You still won't know whether those people who were ineligible voted for Trump or for Clinton or for somebody else. And so it's impossible to ever know exactly, if you took out all the ineligible votes, what the final tally would be in that election.

"Obviously, based on the data you can make some very educated guesses."

Kobach noted the Presidential Commission on Election Integrity, which held its first meeting Wednesday in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, has an objective goal of rooting out voter fraud (if it exists) and figuring out how to prevent it.

"The commission is to look at the facts as they are and go where the facts lead us on voter fraud and threats to the integrity of our elections," he said.
