Poll: 35 Percent of Americans Say They Are Better Off Financially Under Trump

Thirty-one percent of Americans say they are now worse off financially than they were at the start of Donald Trump’s presidency, while 35 percent say they are better off now financially since Trump took office in January 2017, according to a poll of likely voters conducted by the Financial Times and the Peter G Peterson Foundation.

The poll also found:

• 45 percent say Trump’s economic policies have helped the U.S. economy, compared with 45 percent who say his policies have not helped
• 48 percent of college-educated men said their fortunes had improved since Trump first became president
• 19 percent of those saying their financial position was worse named the burden of debt as the most important factor
• 24 percent of those saying their financial situation had improved cited the amount of personal savings and investments for their improved situation
• Respondents are most likely to report being somewhat better off (37%) followed by much better or no change (both 28%)
• 27 percent of respondents pointed to trade disputes with major trading partners as the biggest threat to the U.S. economy

The nationwide poll surveyed 1,005 likely voters and has a margin of error ± 3 percentage points.
