Even worse than his top-line approval ratings dropping to a record low, President Donald Trump is experiencing waning support from his supporters — both numbers are at 42 percent, according to the latest Politico/Morning Consult poll.
The survey was given after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey but before the two latest bombshells — Trump's divulgence of classified information to the Russians and his alleged attempt to stifle the FBI's probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
The results among registered voters:
- Trump's approval rating - 42 percent, down 4 points from last week.
- 50 percent disapprove of Trump's performance, up 3 points from last week.
- 43 percent of Republicans "strongly approve" of Trump.
- 42 percent of self-identified Trump voters approve of his performance.
- 79 percent of Republicans approve of the job Trump is doing.
"President Trump's approval has fallen from 51 percent in mid-April to 42 percent today," Morning Consult co-founder and chief research officer Kyle Dropp told Politico.
"A less reported-on trend is the waning enthusiasm for Trump in his base. When Trump took office, 56 percent of his voters strongly approved of his job performance. Today that number stands at 42 percent."
Trump is also losing support from independents, 50 percent of who disapprove of his performance.
The poll surveyed 2,001 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
