More than half of American voters surveyed say Attorney General Jeff Sessions lied during his confirmation hearings and should resign, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.

Here are the highlights of the survey:

  • 52 percent say he lied under oath when he stated he did not have communications with Russian officials while working with the Trump campaign, compared to 40 percent who said he made an "unclear statement."
  • 51 percent of those polled say he should resign, while 42 percent disagree.
  • 23 percent view him favorable, while 43 percent do not.
  • 34 percent believe Sessions did something illegal; 29 percent say his statements were unethical, but not against the law and 30 percent do not think he did anything seriously wrong.

"The gavel comes down hard on Attorney General Jeff Sessions," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"He lied and he should quit because of it, say Americans, who are clearly very concerned about the Russian affair and all the administration personnel involved with it."

Other results from the poll break down like this:

  • 32 percent approve of the way President Donald Trump is handling the U.S. policy on Russia, while 54 percent disagree.
  • 45 percent say Trump should lower taxes on business, while 49 percent are opposed.
  • 36 percent say Trump should remove regulations on businesses, while 53 percent disagree.
  • 67 percent say Trump should release his tax returns, while 29 percent disagree.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,323 voters nationwide between March 2 to 6 with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
