Republicans favor President Donald Trump over Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., in Trump's criticism of McConnell's leadership in the Senate, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Wednesday.
Republicans in the poll said they believed Trump was more conservative, more knowledgeable on policy, more honest, and more in touch with them, according to Politico.
Results include:
- 50 percent of Republicans said Trump was more conservative: 25 percent chose McConnell.
- 41 percent said Trump knew more about policy than McConnell, who got 34 percent of their votes.
- 55 percent said Trump was more honest than McConnell with 14 percent.
- 60 percent said Trump was more in touch with GOP voters than McConnell, who only earned 16 percent.
- 50 percent sided with Trump in his slams against McConnell for failing to repeal and replace Obamacare, with 32 percent saying the attacks were not appropriate, according to Politico.
Among all voters, however, not just Republicans, McConnell had more support:
- 56 percent said Trump's slams were inappropriate, while 27 percent said they were appropriate, and 17 percent did not know or had no opinion.
- 36 percent said McConnell was more conservative, 28 percent believe Trump is, and 36 percent had no opinion.
- 53 percent said McConnell knows more about the legislative process, compared to 16 percent who said Trump knows more, and 31 percent who did not know or had no opinion.
- 47 percent said McConnell knows more about policy issues than Trump. 21 percent said Trump knows more about policy and 32 percent did not know or had no opinion.
Among all voters in the poll, not just Republicans, voters agreed that Trump was more in touch, more effective, more honest, and more trustful than McConnell.
- 34 percent said Trump was more in touch with Republican voters, while 29 percent said McConnell was. 37 percent of voters did not know or had no opinion.
- 33 percent said Trump was more effective, while 27 percent sided with McConnell and 41 percent did not know or had no opinion.
- 28 percent said Trump was more trustworthy; 25 percent said McConnell was and 47 percent did not know or had no opinion.
- 28 percent said Trump was more honest; 25 percent said McConnell was and 47 percent did not know or had no opinion.
The poll was conducted Aug. 10-14 among 1,997 registered voters, with a plus or minus 2-point sampling error, according to Politico.
