A new poll has found 49 percent of Americans believe President Donald Trump’s performance at his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin could be described as “treasonous.”
In addition, only 5 percent think the United States benefitted from the powwow more than Russia did, according to the survey conducted by The Daily Beast, a news and opinion website and Ipsos, a global market research and a consulting firm.
The poll of 1,005 adults, conducted two days after the Helsinki meeting, is in stark contrast with Trump’s assessment that the meeting was a rousing success and that those who disagree are “haters.”
The poll found:
- 49 percent agree Trump’s performance could be described as “treasonous,” including 21 percent who Republican respondents. By contrast, only 27 percent of disagree with the assessment of treasonous behavior.
- 49 percent agree with the statement that Trump is “too deferential” towards Putin, including 69 percent of Democrats and one third of Republicans.
- Only five percent of Americans think the U.S. benefits from the summit more than Russia, while a 34 percent say it was more beneficial to Russia.
- 51 percent, believe Russia will interfere in the midterm elections, with 70 percent of Democrats agreeing and 37 percent of Republicans agreeing.
- 30 percent of Republicans say they have a favorable view of Putin, while only 10 percent of Democrats do.
The respondents to the poll included 338 Democrats, 329 Republicans and 224 Independents. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
