President Donald Trump unraveled an "a-plus" diplomatic trip and a great Normandy speech on the 75th anniversary of D-Day by attacking political opponents, something he "should be above," according to longtime ally, if not apologist, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y.
"I have a different style from the president. I wouldn't have been attacking Nancy Pelosi from Normandy," Rep. King told "The Cats Roundtable" on 970 AM-N.Y. "But, first of all, she attacked him, and he had every right to do it.
"I just think that for his own sake, since his speech was so outstanding . . . he should've let it be until he got home. He should be above that."
After House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., made comments she would would prefer the president lose in 2020 and be jailed for criminal activity in lieu of impeachment proceedings, President Trump fired back, calling her a "disaster" and a "nasty, vindictive, horrible person."
Rep. King told host John Catsimatidis the president has tried to work with the new House Speaker, but "she has really crossed the line" and "tried to one up everybody by saying the president should be in jail."
"I understand the president's anger," Rep. King said. "I'm justing saying, I wish for his sake, he had not responded. Because it did detract somewhat from the coverage of the outstanding speech he gave."
