The Democratic Party must turn their attention back to the working class voters that voted for President Donald Trump, Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana, said in a podcast released Monday.

"(Trump) had this message about fairness and unfairness that should be the bread and butter of the Democratic Party," Buttigieg said on Monday's episode of David Axelrod's podcast, "The Axe Files."

Buttigieg, an openly gay, progressive Democrat, said that Republicans took the idea of fairness away from Democrats, "with devastating effect."

The mayor ran for the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee that was won by Tom Perez.

Local elections to school boards and state house are vital to the Democrats' success, and during the podcast interview, he encouraged Perez to shift his focus to local races.

"My hope is that (Perez) will direct the party toward working from the bottom up," and include working-class voters, he said.

He said that activists are "profoundly self-defeating" if they support challengers in primaries to Democrats that have gone along with some of President Donald Trump's plans.

"I think one of the big problems in Democratic politics is an ideology that's organized completely around Republican politics and ideology. And the only way we take somebody's measure is to evaluate how vigorously they oppose or how closely they imitate Republican policies," Buttigieg said.

The Democrats' real opponents are Republicans, not each other, he said.

"If we want to win, we've got to concentrate our efforts on the opposition — the real opposition — and that is congressional Republicans and this president that they enable," the mayor said on the podcast.

The mayor does not appear interested in moving his political career beyond Indiana. "I don't think that's going to be me… I think a lot of emerging leaders take a look at opportunities to run for Congress and decide it is not for them," Buttigieg told The Huffington Post last week.
