The fact that Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry supported Democrat Al Gore for president in 1988 is getting a lot of attention now in the race.
But it’s becoming unclear exactly what the Texas governor did for Gore,
Politico reports.
Perry backers contest the notion that he was Gore’s state campaign chairman. They aren’t alone. PolitiFact, the Pulitzer-winning fact-checking website, stated in a posting Wednesday that talk of Perry as state campaign chairman was “half-true” and “legend.”
That conclusion came from news articles from 1988 and speaking to “political players in Texas and Tennessee,” the story read. A former Gore press operative said “we didn’t have a chairman in Texas; we didn’t have co-chairs. We weren’t that organized."
But Perry himself hasn’t denied being Gore’s campaign chairman in recent interviews.
