The past eight years have been difficult ones, but Republicans are ready make improvements following President Barack Obama's eight years in office, Sen. Pat Toomey said in Saturday's GOP weekly address.
"Terror returned to our shores from Boston to San Bernardino," the Pennsylvania Republican said. "We’ve endured the worst economic recovery since World War II and the weakest labor participation in 40 years. The middle class has shrunk. And the cost of healthcare has skyrocketed under President Obama."
Republicans in the Senate have already started tackling issues, including healthcare and military readiness, that they'll address along with incoming President-elect Donald Trump, and defense remains among one of the top priorities, said Toomey.
"We helped to keep America safe by supplying more of the tools service members need to take on national security challenges and help strengthen our military posture," said Toomey.
In addition, beginning in January, Congress and the Trump administration will "work to transition Americans to a better healthcare system that gives families and individuals affordable choices in coverage, and takes Washington bureaucrats out of the doctor’s office."
Trump and most Republican lawmakers have promised to repeal and replace Obamacare in upcoming years, and the incoming president has also vowed that he will eliminate many of Obama's regulations while strengthening the nation's military.
“This has been a difficult eight years,” Toomey said Saturday. "Many Americans don’t believe their children will be better off than they were. And some young people feel the American dream is slipping out of their reach.”
