U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi posted on social media Thursday that the Department of Justice is not conducting an investigation into Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte, countering social media claims about an active DOJ probe into the Trump administration official.
"Fake news. There is no investigation into Bill Pulte," Bondi wrote on X.
The clarification comes against the backdrop of a nonpartisan congressional watchdog investigation at the Government Accountability Office (GAO) confirming it has opened a review into Pulte's actions at the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA).
The GAO is examining whether Pulte may have misused his authority in referring prominent Democrats and public officials, including New York Attorney General Letitia James; Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif.; Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif.; and others, to the Justice Department for alleged mortgage fraud after requests from a group of Senate Democrats.
Pulte, confirmed earlier in 2025 as FHFA director, has drawn scrutiny for targeting political opponents with criminal referrals and high-profile allegations even as many of the cases have stalled or faced legal challenges.
This clarification by Bondi comes amid broader political tensions over the role of federal agencies and whether officials are being used to pursue political adversaries, an issue that has drawn criticism from both sides of the aisle.
