Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Thursday that he doesn't want the Republican blueprint for tax reform to "be some piece of crap, which we're so used to around here."
When asked by a reporter what the biggest challenges the GOP will face in passing their plan, Hatch answered, "fellow senators."
"It's mostly all complicated," the Senate Finance Committee Chairman said of the legislation to Politico. "I want it to be the right kind of bill. I don't want it to be some piece of crap, which we're so used to around here."
Hatch and the others in the "Big Six" who worked on the plan have been defending their outline for tax reform since its release. The ranking Democrat on Hatch's committee, Sen. Ron Wyden, R-Ore., recently called it a "far-right Republican scheme to endow future generations of the mega-wealthy and leave what amounts to crumbs for the middle-class behind," according to The Hill.
Big Six members Gary Cohn, the director of the National Economic Council, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin have both made TV appearances this week to reassure the public about the plan, although Cohn said on ABC's "Good Morning America," that he "can't guarantee" members of the middle-class won't see their taxes increase.
"We think there will be $2 trillion of growth," Mnuchin said on Fox Business. "So we think this tax plan will cut down the deficits by a trillion dollars."
