North Carolina represented a key state in President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign victory, and only one of the state's eight Democratic House members lost in last month’s elections. But as he visits North Carolina Monday, Obama has a lot to worry about there in 2012,

Although Democratic congressional candidates fared well, North Carolina's Legislature switched to Republican control for the first time in two centuries.
The sagging economy will hurt Obama. "At this moment, it does not look good," Richard Kearney, director of the school of public and international affairs at North Carolina State University, told The Hill. Approval ratings for both Obama and Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue sit the low 30s.
Obama is popular in the state's urban areas and among blacks, Kearney says. "So he's got a base of support, but the tides are against him."
