U.S. intelligence officials believe North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has no intention to follow through on full denuclearization, according to The Washington Post.
U.S. officials told the newspaper that following the June 12 summit between President Donald Trump and Kim in Singapore, the Defense Intelligence Agency collected evidence that shows North Korea plans to hide the number of nuclear warheads they posses, and the existence of facilities to manufacture nuclear fuel from the United States. Officials told NBC News on Friday that the CIA and other intelligence agencies have concluded that North Korea believes nuclear weapons are essential for its survival.
"There's no evidence that they are decreasing stockpiles, or that they have stopped their production,” an unnamed official told NBC. "There is absolutely unequivocal evidence that they are trying to deceive the U.S."
An agency official told CNN that President Donald Trump’s administration plans to deliver a detailed list of what North Korea must do as part of its denuclearization process, but another official told the news network that they expect Kim to publicly agree to denuclearization while hiding weapons and infrastructure.
The Post notes that numerous intelligence officials and experts on North Korea have said that there’s little to differentiate Kim’s pledge from the many similar vows the country’s leaders have made in the past, all while ramping up secret efforts to construct nuclear weapons.
