Gingrich: Trump 'Trying to Continue a Momentum' With Dems
(Fox News' "Hannity")

President Donald Trump made a deal with Democratic leaders on the debt ceiling as a way to keep up progress that can come from both Republicans and Democrats working together such as in the efforts to handle the effects of Hurricane Harvey, according to Newt Gingrich Thursday.

"He was trying to continue a momentum of being together, of doing something together, and of showing that the American government can act quickly," the former House speaker said Thursday on Fox News' "Hannity."

"I think that's another signal to the American people that maybe some things are coming together… maybe he (Trump) in fact is going to be able to pull the country together the way they came together in Texas."

Gingrich said he believed the founding fathers would be pleased with the work of federal, local, and state officials in the handling of the storm.

"The founding fathers developed a Constitution for a limited, but effective government. They didn't want a sloppy government. They didn't want an incompetent government … I think they would look at what's happening in Texas and say the system is working at every level."

On Friday, the former speaker also addressed Trump's actions in working with Democrats during an interview on "Fox & Friends."

President Trump saw that action needed to be taken to handle the approaching storms, according to Gingrich. "I think Trump saw a situation, with everything he just saw in Houston, now looking at what's coming in Florida, and his thinking was, 'We've got to get some movement in Washington… I'm going to get some money to Houston, and to do that, I've got to get the debt ceiling taken care of.'"

"I don't think this is some gigantic earthquake. I think it's an immediate tactical move by the president to get some momentum," the former speaker said.
