Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., is trying to cover up a bad situation by claiming national security is in danger from a GOP memo detailing FBI surveillance abuses, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday.
"I think Adam Schiff is desperately trying to cover up a terrible situation," Gingrich told Fox News "Fox & Friends" on Monday.
"The Obama administration was deliberately politicizing the justice system . . . apparently the FBI used a totally false, politically paid for Hillary Clinton campaign document to convince a federal judge to issue a wiretap. Now, that should be pretty startling, even for a liberal Democrat."
Gingrich said when one starts building lists of former FBI Director James Comey's actions, it is clear a complete investigation is needed.
"Let me be clear, 98 percent of the FBI agents are honorable, hardworking serious people who try to enforce the law," said Gingrich, but at the upper level, there were those who were corrupt, and "it's hard for me to see how you defend it."
Gingrich also discussed the upcoming deadlines for government spending and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, saying he hopes Democrats were "burned badly enough" they will not push for another shutdown.
"The president has said openly, he wants to actually help the Dreamers, three times as many of them as [former President] Barack Obama did, so, I don't understand why the Democrats can't accept victory as victory and actually help the people they claim they care about," Gingrich said.
