Rob Astorino: Cuomo Indictment Likely 'After Election Day'

By    |   Thursday, 16 October 2014 01:50 PM

New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino tells Newsmax that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo may be facing an indictment, most likely some time after the election on Nov. 4.

"This governor is under investigation by a federal prosecutor for corrupting the anti-corruption commission in New York, for potential witness tampering, obstruction of justice and failure to report state crimes," Astorino told John Bachman on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Thursday.

"It is possible that we can have an indictment handed down by Election Day or probably after Election Day," he explained.

"Like [former New York Gov.] Eliot Spitzer before him, we can have a governor that plea bargains and has to resign his office," he said. "This is serious."

According to an investigation by The New York Times, Cuomo's office was blocking the anti-corruption commission, officially called the Moreland Commission, during an investigation once it started looking into groups and issues that were connected to the governor's office.

Besides the problems with the anti-corruption commission, Astorino has also called Cuomo's Start-Up New York Program a fraud.

"It's a $250 million campaign that was designed to put businesses from the 49 other states into New York," Astorino told Newsmax.

"Half of the program is being spent in New York — it's a thinly disguised campaign commercial," he explained.

"He's swiped $37 million from Hurricane Sandy relief funds to put displaced people back into their homes — put it in the Start-Up New York campaign," he said. "It's exactly what's wrong with policy in New York."

"We're the highest taxed state in America, the most regulated, the least business friendly state, the worst economic outlook, the worst state to retire in," according to Astorino.

"We should be fixing the tax structure in New York, lowering taxes," he explained.

"The Wall Street Journal wrote a great editorial . . . that said my plan is what would actually fix the economy in New York and put people back to work," he said.

"Once they fix the bad policies and get it in place where it's a business friendly environment, then maybe you can have some tax incentives to bring people in," he added.

"My tax plan would take us from the worst, 50th in America out of 50 states, to the most competitive in the northeast and that's a big first step, which is what we'll need in this state to actually attract businesses, not gimmicks."

Astorino says that the polls are "closing in on this race" and that he believes he has "a legitimate chance to win."
