New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu on Thursday took exception with President Donald Trump's characterization of his state as a "drug-infested den," saying he was "disappointed."

"The president is wrong. It's disappointing his mischaracterization of this epidemic ignores the great things this state has to offer," Sununu, a Republican, said in a statement, according to The Hill.

Trump made the comments in a phone call with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto in January, the transcript of which was obtained and published by The Washington Post.

"We have a massive drug problem where kids are becoming addicted to drugs because the drugs are being sold for less money than candy," Trump said during the call he expected to be private. "I won New Hampshire because New Hampshire is a drug-infested den."

Of course, Hillary Clinton narrowly defeated Trump in New Hampshire during the election though Trump took the state in the primary.

Sununu said the state's efforts in fighting opioid addiction are starting to take hold.

"We are already seeing positive signs of our efforts as overdoses and deaths are declining in key parts of the state," Sununu said. "In spite of this crisis, New Hampshire remains the best place to live, work and raise a family."

In 2015, New Hampshire was second only to West Virginia in the highest death rate due to drug overdose in the country.
