Voters are giving Democrats their largest advantage in congressional preference in nine years, according to a new poll.
In the NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey posted Sunday — conducted after Democrats’ Senate victory in Alabama — 50 percent of registered voters say they prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress compared with 39 percent who want Republicans in charge.
The last time Democrats held both a double-digit lead and hit 50 percent on the question was September 2008, NBC News reported. In October, Democrats had a 7-point advantage on congressional preference, 48 percent to 41 percent.
Here’s a breakdown:
- Young voters 18 to 34 prefer Democratic congressional control 69 percent to 21 percent; women pick the party 54 percent to 34 percent; and independents choose Democrats 43 percent to 31 percent.
- Republicans have the edge among white voters, with 46 percent to 44 percent preferring a GOP-controlled Congress; the GOP has a 50-38 percent edge among white voters without a college degree.
- Male voters prefer a Democrat-controlled Congress 46 percent to 44 percent; senior citizens choose Democrats 46 percent to 42 percent.
- 59 percent of Democratic voters saying they have a high level of interest in next year’s elections; 49 percent of Republican voters saying the same thing.
The poll also finds Trump’s job approval rating at 41 percent among all Americans, up 3 points from October; 56 percent of Americans disapprove.
The poll’s overall margin of error is plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
