Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr warned of "an assault on our institutions" during a new interview.
A vocal critic of President Donald Trump, Kerr sat down with USA Today and discussed the state of the country in terms of politics.
"There's absolutely an assault on our institutions and on our core values as a country," said Kerr, who then referenced a recent column written by former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates.
"One of the things she writes is how important it is to speak the truth, and for people to not be deceived, coerced. That's the entire reasoning behind the structure of our government, you know? Checks and balances.
"But it goes beyond the checks and balances. It's up to the citizens to, 'We The People,' right? It's not, 'We the President and Congress.' It's 'We The People, in order to form a more perfect union …'"
Kerr said it's important for people to continue to speak out about perceived wrongs. He also expressed his support of the free press.
"That's another one of the tenets of what Sally Yates was talking about, was that the free press is what allows us to call out [expletive]. There's an assault on the free press right now. You see the list of words that they didn’t want the CDC to use? I mean, what is that? It's unreal."
The CDC was informed earlier this month that it is not allowed to use seven words and phrases in official documents pertaining to the agency's budget in 2018.
"There's a big section of the population that truly believes [Trump is] the patriotic one, he's trying to uphold America's ideals because the ideals have been blurred, right? And I think it's not all Trump, right?" Kerr said, before adding, "a lot of people are behind Trump, which is kind of scary."
