White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro Thursday slammed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the holdup on approving the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, noting that time is running out to get it approved before the end of this year.
"She fiddles while the USMCA is in the deep freeze, " Navarro said on Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria." "The false narrative here is this whole issue about labor enforcement. That problem's effectively been solved."
But with the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays approaching, there are only about 20 legislative days left for the House to pass the measure before the 2020 election year hits.
"(This is) the biggest tragedy I've seen in the swamp, politics over policy," Navarro said about the USMCA remaining on hold.
"This is a deal that's twice the volume as what we do with China, it's five times the exports to Mexico and Canada, the biggest and best deal ever," said Navarro. "It's designed to turn north America, and particularly the U.S. Into a powerhouse of manufacturing for the 21st century."
Mexico ratified the trade agreement on June 19, and Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will approve it once Pelosi brings it up for a House vote.
Navarro pointed out that the agreement will require that 75 percent of automobile components will be made in the United States, Canada, and Mexico to avoid tariffs. Of those, 40 to 45 percent of auto parts must be made by U.S. workers who will be earning at least $16 an hour by 2023. However, Pelosi and House Democrats have said they are concerned about how the $16 an hour commitment will be upheld.
