Heartened by Sen. John McCain's decision Friday to vote "no" on his party's latest Obamacare repeal legislation, Democrats will "put a stake in the heart of this monstrous bill," Rep. Nancy Pelosi vowed Friday.
The House Minority leader, a California Democrat, tweeted that the Arizona Republican's "courage has always been clear."
And in a letter to Democrats, she called on Democrats to keep pressure on other GOP lawmakers to reject the Graham-Cassidy legislation — and to keep the issue in front of the public, The Hill reported.
"Together, we will finally put a stake in the heart of this monstrous bill," she wrote.
McCain's announcement dealt a potentially deciding blow to the proposal that'd kill Obamacare and instead provide for block grants to states to carry out their own healthcare plan.
Republicans can have only two defections on the bill to get the 50 votes necessary for it to pass. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., has already said he'd oppose the legislation, and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, has indicated she's leaning against it, the Hill reported.
No Democrats are expected to vote for the measure.
After Sept. 30, any healthcare bill would require a filibuster-proof 60 votes, a majority that would require Democratic support.
