YouGov Poll Finds Low US Support for NAFTA

Fewer Americans support the continuation of the NAFTA agreement than those who think it would be better to see it fold, according to a new study.

In a YouGov poll commissioned by the Bertelsmann Foundation, 36 percent of Americans said it would be beneficial for the U.S. if NAFTA were to be dissolved, while 30 percent said it would not be beneficial. Thirty-four percent said they did not know.

Other key results in the survey:

• 63 percent of Mexicans said it would not be beneficial for their country to dissolve NAFTA, a 1994 trade agreement between the three North American countries.
• 58 percent of Canadians said dissolving NAFTA would not be beneficial to them.
• 79 percent of Mexicans, 73 percent of Canadians, and 56 percent of Americans said international trade is good for their respective countries.

The Trump administration is trying to renegotiate NAFTA to make it more fair to the U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to pull the U.S. from the agreement if a new deal cannot be reached.
